A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) — also called a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) or inverter drive — is a power electronics device that controls the speed and torque of an AC induction motor by varying the frequency and voltage of its power supply.
For centrifugal loads (pumps, fans, blowers), power consumption follows the Affinity Laws: reducing speed by just 20% cuts power demand by nearly 50%. A pump running at 80% speed uses only 51% of the power compared to full speed.
Match the VFD's continuous current rating to the motor's full load amperes (FLA) — not kW rating. For pumps and fans select a 'normal duty' rating; for conveyors and compressors with high starting torque, select 'heavy duty'. Always derate in high-ambient or high-altitude installations.
