Why UPS Topology Matters

Choosing the wrong UPS topology is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes in power protection. An offline UPS that costs half as much as an online unit can still allow a voltage spike to reach sensitive equipment during the switchover delay.

Offline / Standby UPS

The simplest and cheapest type. Mains power passes directly to the load; the inverter only activates on failure. Transfer time: 4–10ms. Suitable for basic desktop PCs and non-critical loads. Not recommended for servers, medical equipment, or industrial PLCs.

Line-Interactive UPS

Adds an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) to handle minor fluctuations without switching to battery. Transfer time: 2–4ms. Good balance of cost and protection for small offices, networking equipment, and workstations.

Online Double-Conversion UPS

The gold standard. Mains power is continuously converted to DC and back to AC — the load always runs off the inverter. Zero transfer time. Provides complete isolation from all power quality problems. Required for data centers, server rooms, medical imaging, and CNC machines.
